RCT or root canal treatment simply translates to treatment of the root canal of the tooth. There are three main layers of the tooth : The opaque yet the hardest tissue in the body which is the outermost layer of a tooth is called enamel, the second and the middle dental tissue is called the dentine which is also responsible for giving the color to your teeth and acts as a protective layer for the innermost and only live tissue of the tooth i.e. the dental pulp. Root canal is the treatment given when the dental pulp is infected or dead.

Why would a tooth require a root canal?

Root canal treatment is given when you have chronic tooth pain which is due to a grossly decayed tooth, a fracture of the tooth due to trauma or accident of any nature, when the infection is seemingly spreading to the tissues around the tooth, etc.

What if I am asked to do a RCT but do not get it done?

Apart from the ongoing pain, the infection will keep spreading and sometimes need more attention than just getting the tooth extraction. It causes severe damage to the tissues around or the supporting bone of the tooth too.

Can the tooth or root canal infection be treated with only medicines?

No. The medicines will definitely relieve the symptoms like pain and fever, it does not stop the infection from increasing and spreading. A proper root canal treatment ensures that the cause and symptoms of the toothache/ decay both are addressed to.

Are root canals very painful?

How long does it take to receive RCT?

It takes a maximum of one and a half hour and most of the root canal treatments are finished in a single sitting unless your tooth has excessive infection.
